PRESIDENT'S APPEAL

About the President's Appeal
Every year on December 10, the Soroptimist International President asks all Soroptimists to join her in making a small sacrifice by contributing to a project that will assist women living in extreme poverty.

This tradition began in 1981 and has assisted women in countries throughout the world including India, Kenya, Angola, Laos, Western Samoa, the former Yugoslavia, Bangladesh and the Dominican Republic. The date, December 10, was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and is recognized today as the United Nations' Human Rights Day.

2007 December 10th Appeal: To Be Announced

2006 December 10th Appeal
SI President Lynn Dunning announced the December 2006 appeal: Project Punjab: Helping Girls Into School.

For 2006, Soroptimist International is partnering with Oxfam GB to raise ?100,000 to increase girls' attendance and improve the quality of education at six primary schools in rural, impoverished areas of Punjab Province, Pakistan.

In Pakistan, one in four children between the ages of five and nine do not go to school. And in rural areas, boys are three times more likely than girls to receive a primary education. As a result, literacy rates for women in some areas are as low as nine percent.

Project Punjab will provide assistance in the districts of Rajanpur and Muzaffargarh, areas that are prone to droughts and flooding and represent two of the three poorest areas in Punjab.

For more information, you are encouraged to download the SI brochure.
