PROJECT INDEPENDENCE
On Monday, January 24, 2005, SI Azusa/Glendora hosted a special program on "Project Independence - Women Survivors
of War" at 6 p.m. at East Valley Medical Center Auditorium on 130 Route 66, in Glendora, California.
The speaker for the evening was Dawn Marie Lemonds of Tustin, California. Dawn Marie is the Soroptimist International
Quadrennial project liaison, 2003-2007. She is a member of Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor, California. She
spoke at length on her travels and participation with Project Independence, emphasizing her
firsthand experience helping women survivors of war.
Project Independence is a four-year joint project of Soroptimist International and Women for Women International
to raise $1.2 million to benefit more than 2,000 women survivors of war. Through Project Independence, women in
Afghanistan, Bosnia and Rwanda will have the opportunity to reclaim their lives.
Project Independence will provide direct aid to help women secure basic needs for themselves and their families; skills and leadership training to give
women the tools they need to rebuild their lives; and microcredit loans to help women start an income-generating project
or business as they look toward the future.
